Rite Aid released a statement on Feb. 11 announcing they had partnered with the federal government’s Federal Retail Pharmacy Program. Rite Aid is following in the footsteps of CVS, Walmart, and Walgreens, who made similar announcements last week and are also participating in the federal program. In association with the program, federal officials will determine where to allocate doses of the vaccine. According to CNN, Rite Aid’s director of public relations Chris Savarese said during the launch that they expect to receive 116,300 doses for about 1,200 Rite Aid locations, which is approximately 100 doses per participating store per week. Although supply is limited right now, officials expect vaccinations to expand to all locations once the supply is available. “Initially, vaccine appointments will still be difficult to schedule at any provider. However, we expect to see availability of the vaccine improve over time, and Rite Aid stands ready to administer as many vaccines as we are allocated quickly, safely, and efficiently,” said president and chief executive officer of Rite Aid Heyward Donigan. “With vaccine demand outpacing supply, the establishment of an additional channel for vaccine allocation and distribution is an important and positive first step in the effort to end COVID-19.” Rite Aid’s announcement comes on the heels of President Joe Biden’s administration declaring that the government would begin shipping doses directly to retail pharmacies on Feb. 11. According to a statement, the program will begin with a total of 1 million doses sent to about 6,500 stores, according to Reuters.
